Helmet Safety Awareness Days
Acquired Brain Injuries are preventable. The most effective approach to dealing with the high costs associated with death and injury is to prevent the injuries before they happen. NBIS is committed to providing education and information on safety in sports and recreation. Legislation in conjunction with sustained education and enforcement programs helps to prevent brain injuries and death.
- 1996 British Columbia was the first province to mandate wearing bicycle helmets
- YES! ABI Can Be Prevented! But the message is still not being heard…
- In 2001 Transport Canada found that of the 80 cyclists who died nationwide , 88% were not wearing helmets
- In 2002 52% of Canadian adults who ride bicycles never or rarely wear a helmet
- Fewer than 40% wear one always, or most of the time
- Canada 's Child Safety Link found that each year more than 500 Canadian children are hospitalized for head injuries from bike crashes alone . Nearly 30 children die from these injuries.
